Learn More About Local Organizations
After hearing the Just Neighbors sermon series, some BelPres members are sharing about ways they are involved in healing injustice in Seattle and the Eastside. One member shared about an organization called Homestead Community Land Trust.
During the Civil Rights era, leaders created a model called the "community land trust" to help people stay in their communities and build wealth through home ownership. A local organization, Homestead Community Land Trust, is following this model in our region. Here's how they describe their work: "Homestead Community Land Trust creates stability, equity and opportunity by developing land and housing in trust, giving lower-income households the opportunity to own a home that is affordable to them and remains affordable to future owners. Our work is expanding an equitable economy for housing to create vibrant communities, help repair the harms of housing discrimination and protect vulnerable communities from displacement."
On September 7, 2023, Town Hall Seattle will host "A Conversation with Henry Louis Gates, Jr." to benefit Homestead Community Land Trust. Homestead writes, "Dr. Gates is unparalleled for his ability to communicate how our lives reflect our histories, and he does so in ways that foster insight, move hearts and inspire action. We look forward to hearing his important perspectives on the historical seeds of present day inequities that make Homestead's work necessary and vital."
